Southern Georgian Bay is alive with Canadian heritage...
Walk into the past, through the streets of downtown Midland, where its history unfolds sharing the rich, and vibrant heritage of this Georgian Bay community. The admission price is free! Visitors and neighbours are invited to take a leisurely stroll, with brochures in hand, and peek into the lives of Midland's past pioneers of industry, its buildings, local businesses and attractions, locomotion, and its busy harbour, all uniquely depicted in the murals.
With over a century of community life on Georgian Bay's shores, the historic mural program came to light nearly ten years ago through the vision of the merchants' Business Improvement Area (BIA), which continues to be funded and maintained by the more than 120 members.
Well over 30 huge murals grace the walls of businesses in the downtown core and the BIA has undertaken the remarkably bold production of a spectacular 16,000 square foot mural, which is scheduled to be completed by the fall 2000. This spectacular mural painted by Fred Lenz, is billed to be North America's largest most colourful, outdoor historical mural. You can view this most eminent mural that is reaching heights of 25 metres (80 ft) and horizontally stretching 60 metres (200 ft), across the ADM grain elevator building at Midland's harbourfront.
Come be a spectator with Midland residents, who are proud of their heritage, and watch as their majestic mural unveils itself, stroke by stroke, this summer.
